It’s situated in central Tanzania, approximately 130 km (80 miles) west of Iringa. Its central location makes it a cornerstone of Tanzania’s Southern Safari Circuit.

Ruaha experiences a hot, semi-arid climate. It has a pronounced dry season from June to October/November, and a wet season from November/December to May. Temperatures can be very hot during the dry season, especially midday, but mornings and evenings are cooler.

Ruaha is renowned for its exceptional wildlife populations:

• Elephants: It boasts Tanzania’s largest elephant population, often seen in large herds, especially near the river.

• African Wild Dog (Painted Dog): One of the best places in Africa to see this critically endangered species.

• Lions: Known for having very large prides, offering fantastic lion sightings.

• Leopards and Cheetahs: While elusive, sightings are good, particularly in certain areas.

• Diverse Antelopes: Including greater kudu (the park’s emblem), lesser kudu, sable antelope, roan antelope, eland, impala, and Grants gazelle.

• Hippos and Crocodiles: Abundant in the Great Ruaha River.

• Zebras, Wildebeest, Giraffes, and Buffalo: Common throughout the park.

• Ruaha is a “Big Four” park (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo). While it offers exceptional sightings of these four, rhinos are absent from the park.

Yes, it’s a phenomenal birding destination with over 570 recorded bird species. It’s a meeting point for northern and southern African bird species, offering a unique diversity of raptors, waterbirds, and miombo woodland specials.

The dry season (June to October/November) is widely considered the best time. The Great Ruaha River becomes the main water source, drawing huge concentrations of animals. Vegetation thins, making spotting easier.
