Detailed Itinerary
Your adventure begins with a morning departure from Dar es Salaam, heading southwest toward Nyerere National Park a scenic drive of approximately 6 hours through coastal villages and lush landscapes. Upon arrival, settle into your lodge and enjoy a hearty lunch or refreshment. In the late afternoon, embark on a tranquil boat safari along the Rufiji River, where you’ll glide past pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and an array of water birds, all against the backdrop of a golden African sunset. Overnight in Nyerere National Park.
After an early breakfast, head out for a full-day game drive in the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park, the largest protected wildlife area in Africa. Traverse varied habitats from open grasslands and dense woodlands to riverine while tracking elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalo, and the elusive African wild dogs. Bird enthusiasts will also be rewarded with sightings of colorful and rare species in this birding paradise. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the bush, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the wild. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Begin the day with an early morning walking safari in Nyerere National Park, guided by an armed ranger an opportunity to connect with the wilderness on foot and learn about animal tracks, plants, and subtle signs of wildlife activity. Return for a hearty breakfast at the lodge, then embark on a scenic drive toward Mikumi National Park via Morogoro (approximately 5 hours). Enjoy views of rural villages, farmland, and the Uluguru Mountains along the way. Arrive at the lodge in the evening for check-in, dinner, and overnight stay.
Spend the day exploring the diverse landscapes of Mikumi National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for lions, giraffes, buffalo, elephants, and a variety of antelope species. You'll enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park, maximizing your time in the wild. In the evening, you will visit the local cultural visit for a deeper connection with the surrounding communities. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, depart Mikumi and embark on a scenic drive through the stunning Baobab Valley, where giant ancient trees line the roadside and offer great photo opportunities. The journey to Iringa takes approximately 3 hours, climbing into the Southern Highlands. Upon arrival, enjoy a relaxed afternoon exploring Iringa town, visiting its local markets, craft shops, or historical sites that reflect the region’s colonial and cultural heritage. Overnight at the charming Iringa Sunset Hotel, offering beautiful views over the Rift Valley escarpment.
Begin the day with an early breakfast before heading west toward Ruaha National Park, a journey of approximately 2.5 hours through the beautiful landscapes of the Southern Highlands. As you approach the park, the scenery shifts into rugged wilderness rich with baobabs, rocky outcrops, and sweeping savannah. Upon arrival, settle into your lodge or tented camp inside the park and enjoy the serenity of this remote and wild environment.Spend the afternoon at leisure or enjoy a short introductory game drive, depending on your arrival time. Overnight inside Ruaha National Park, surrounded by untamed African bush.
Set off early for a full-day game drive through the vast and dramatic landscapes of Ruaha, Tanzania’s largest national park. The park is known for its rugged terrain, large baobab forests, and excellent predator sightings. Search for greater kudu, elephants, lions, leopards, and an incredible variety of birds. Enjoy a picnic lunch during the game drive. In the late afternoon, take part in a cultural visit to a nearby village or community project to learn about Maasai traditions and daily life. Return to Hilltop Lodge Ruaha for dinner and overnight stay, perched with scenic views over the surrounding wilderness.
After breakfast, depart Ruaha and begin the approximately 5-hour drive to Morogoro, passing through beautiful Tanzanian countryside and rural villages. Upon arrival in Morogoro, check in at the comfortable Edelwyss Inn where you can relax and enjoy dinner. This overnight stop prepares you for your onward journey by train the following day.
On your final day, enjoy a comfortable and scenic train ride from Morogoro to Dar es Salaam, which takes approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel or directly to Julius Nyerere International Airport for your onward travel. This concludes your unforgettable Wild Southern Tanzania Safari experience.
