Overview
The most complete way to see southern Tanzania. You travel from the rivers of Nyerere to the plains of Mikumi, hike to the Sanje Waterfalls in the Udzungwa Mountains, and finish in Ruaha, a remote park of baobabs, big prides and elephants. Ruaha is one of East Africa’s most important strongholds for lions and elephants. Along the way there are walks with rangers, a Maasai boma visit and time to understand how these landscapes and the communities around them depend on each other.

Day by day
Arrive in Dar es Salaam
We meet you at Julius Nyerere International Airport and take you to your hotel.
To Nyerere and the Rufiji River
Drive to Nyerere, then an afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River among hippos, crocodiles and birdlife.
A full day in Nyerere
A full day in Tanzania’s largest protected area, looking for elephants, lions, hippos and African wild dogs.
A walk, then on to Mikumi
A morning walk with a park ranger, then a drive of about five hours to Mikumi via Morogoro.
A full day in Mikumi
Game drives through Mikumi’s plains and woodland for giraffe, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard, with a picnic lunch. On the way back, a visit to a Maasai boma.
Udzungwa and the Sanje Waterfalls
A drive of about 1½ hours to the Udzungwa Mountains and a guided forest hike to the Sanje Waterfalls, with birdlife, monkeys and endemic plants along the trail.
Udzungwa to Iringa
A drive of about five hours through baobab country, villages and farmland up to Iringa in the Southern Highlands.
Into Ruaha
A drive of about two hours to Ruaha and an afternoon game drive in its rugged, baobab-studded landscape.
Ruaha, then back to Iringa
An early game drive and a bush lunch in Ruaha, then the drive back to Iringa.
By train to Dar es Salaam
Drive to Morogoro and take the evening SGR train to Dar es Salaam, with a transfer to your hotel.
