Overview

A compact northern safari. You start in Lake Manyara, with its hot spring and hippo pool, then cross the Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti. After a morning game drive you sleep on the crater rim, ready to go down onto the crater floor at about 6:15 the next morning, the best time to look for black rhino.

Route

Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha → Lake Manyara → Karatu → Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro rim → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha → Kilimanjaro Airport

Your guide adjusts each day to the wildlife, the weather and your pace.

Day 1

Arrive in Arusha

We meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in Arusha to rest.

Day 2

Lake Manyara National Park

A game drive in Lake Manyara, with hippos, buffalo, monkeys, flamingos and, with luck, tree-climbing lions. Visit the hot spring and hippo pool, then rest at your lodge.

Day 3

Into the Serengeti

Drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with views over the crater, into the Serengeti. If the migration is nearby you may see the herds. Picnic lunch on the way to camp.

Day 4

Serengeti to the crater rim

A morning game drive in the Serengeti, lunch at a picnic site, then about two hours’ drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater, then Arusha

Descend into the crater at about 6:15 am to look for black rhino and the crater’s other wildlife. Picnic lunch on the crater floor, a final game drive, then back to Arusha.

Day 6

Fly home

Time to relax or explore Arusha, depending on your flight, then transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
