Rainforest-covered mountains with waterfalls and primates found nowhere else on Earth. There are no roads inside the park: you explore Udzungwa on foot.
Udzungwa is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain of ancient forests so isolated that many of their plants and animals evolved nowhere else. Two primates live only here: the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje mangabey. The most popular walk climbs through the forest to the Sanje Falls, which drop about 170 metres down the mountainside, with views over the Kilombero valley.
The Udzungwa forests are a global biodiversity hotspot, and they also feed the rivers that water the Kilombero valley below, where many people farm. Protecting the forest protects both. Your walking fees go to the park, and the guides who walk with you come from the area.
How your visit helps. The park and conservation fees in your trip price go to the authority that protects this place, paying for rangers, anti-poaching patrols and park upkeep. We hire local guides and staff and use locally owned suppliers wherever we can.
June to October is driest and best for hiking. Trails are steep and can be slippery after rain, so good walking shoes are essential.
Lodges and camps we work with here include Hondo Hondo Udzungwa Forest Tented Camp, Udzungwa Falls Lodge and Udzungwa Twiga Hotel. We suggest the best fit for your budget and dates in your personal itinerary and quote.
Tell us your dates and how you like to travel, and we will send you a personal itinerary and quote. No obligation to book.
